Blackmailing Iraq

Today, in Fall 2007, we are blackmailing the Iraqi Parliament by telling them that they won’t get the reconstruction funds we have promised unless they pass legislation that will leave the Iraq National Oil Company with control of only 17 of the 80 known Iraqi oil fields.  The rest, plus any new discoveries, will be up for grabs by private oil companies of the world.

This requirement was Benchmark 1 of the “Support the Troops” bill Congress passed last week. Besides the draconian loss for Iraq, this would mean that our troops would need to be there for the life of the contracts - another 20 to 30 years - protecting US oil interests.

No other country in the Middle East has privatized its oil. Saudi Arabia Kuwait, Bahrain, and Iran have given only limited usage contract to international oil companies for one or two years.

We have no right to insist that Iraq give up its oil to foreign control.  Bad enough that we’ve destroyed their country after no threat from them.  This kind of blackmail to steal their oil is beneath the values we claim to stand for.
