Destructive Patterns

in the Bush Administration:

bullet

Secrecy, manipulation, deception, misinformation, stonewalling

bullet

Serious fiscal irresponsibility

bullet

Favoring of industry and holders of wealth at expense of common good

bullet

Appointments and firings based on political loyalty; intimidation and firings of critics

bullet

Weakening of New Deal programs in favor of privatization of government services, with sacrifice of civil service protections and accountability

bullet

Deleting or changing scientific warnings in reports on global warming; continuing refusal to take meaningful action to reduce emissions

bullet

Blurring of separation of church and state in faith-based programs established by Executive Order, paid for by public taxes not authorized or supervised by Congress.

bullet

Over 1000 signing statements, with Bush saying in effect that he will not feel bound by a law he has just signed

bullet

Recess appointments of individuals the Senate would not approve

bullet

Denial of habeas corpus to hundreds of suspects detained indefinitely

bullet

Secret prisons, ghost detainees, kidnapping and rendition of suspects to countries known to torture prisoners

bullet

Disregard for national and international law

bullet

Bullying vs. cooperation and respect in relations with other countries, thereby creating widespread hostility toward the US and widespread dismay at US abandonment of traditional principles

bullet

Declaring a new National Security Strategy aimed at US control everywhere in the world

bullet

Refusal to accept limitation on US use of space

We have a president who feels he is above the law, says God is telling him what to do, who ignores or punishes critics, and seems unable to admit mistakes.
